Shavuos in the Holy City
There’s nothing like the feeling of renewal as we approach Zman Matan Toraseinu, a Yom Tov that brings with it the fragrant blossoms and fresh greenery of spring. Here in Jerusalem Estates, at the pulsating heart of the city’s center, one can already sense the beauty and authenticity of the Chag that first united our nation.

Thousands of families, bachurim, and avreichim from Israel and the world over are preparing to celebrate Shavuos in Yerushalayim. Many live in the surrounding neighborhoods, while a select few are privileged to dwell at the center of it all. These residents will soon be joined by scores of families from other cities and countries, who have been working for weeks in advance to secure Yom Tov lodgings in this particular neighborhood. Indeed, Torah is the lifeblood of this special city, which is full of some of the largest Chassidic courts, kehillos, and yeshivos in the world. Come Shavuos, light will stream from these halls of Torah, while the Kol Torah reverberates through the night, spreading true Simchas Yom Tov to all who hear it.
“יראה כל זכורך את פני ד’ אלוקיך”
Of course, the highlight of Shavuos in Yerushalayim is the citywide pilgrimage to the Kosel. As soon as Yom Tov begins, Jews begin to stream from the farthest neighborhoods, as individuals and in small groups. Toward morning, in the center of Yerushalayim, the river becomes a massive surge, with thousands heading in the same direction as one nation.
When the sun rises, the bustling commotion in the packed Kosel plaza quiets down, as hundreds of thousands of Jews stand up together for Shacharis. The sky brightens and the silence that marks the beginning of the prayers is punctuated only by the chirping of birds atop the historic stones. It’s a profoundly moving experience, one that is difficult to capture in words
